DoMUS Apartment Project Wins Wisconsin Urban Wood Utilization Award

Mandel Group, HGA, and C.D. Smith Construction to be recognized at USGBC awards ceremony

Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Mandel Group, HGA, and C.D. Smith Construction, who together made up the project team for the DoMUS apartment complex in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward, have been awarded the first Wisconsin Urban Wood Utilization Award as part of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Wisconsin Transformation Awards program. The Wisconsin Urban Wood Utilization Award is a sponsored award category presented by Wudeward Urban Forest Products and funded in part by a grant from the USDA Forest Service, an equal opportunity provider.

Mandel Group, DoMUS owner, and developer; HGA, project architect; and C.D. Smith Construction, general contractor, worked alongside Wudeward Urban Forest Products, a commercial supplier of Wisconsin Urban Wood lumber, to source, design, and install American elm shelving for the luxury apartment units, community room, and lobby.

Throughout the course of the project, Mandel Group, HGA, and C.D. Smith demonstrated sustainable-sourcing leadership in design, specification, and application of Wisconsin Urban Wood, according to Dwayne Sperber, owner of Wudeward Urban Forest Products.

“Just like other sustainably-sourced materials, Wisconsin Urban Wood does not come in standard sizes, colors, or volumes. And it doesn’t always fit seamlessly into a standard construction management process,” Sperber said.  “The DoMUS team communicated so well with respect to lead times, how the order would look upon arrival, and installation plans that ultimately, the install went no differently than if they were working with any standard material.”

Urban wood comes from trees where we live – on streets, in parks, on residential land, and commercial properties. When the trees have to be removed due to failing health, damage, or construction, they are processed into lumber instead of sent to a landfill. Using Wisconsin Urban Wood assures buyers that the wood originated from Wisconsin and passed through an entire supply chain of Wisconsin-based people and businesses to arrive as the final product.

“By incorporating Wisconsin Urban Wood into their design, the DoMUS team is contributing to a more holistic management of urban trees, where every part of the tree, from seed to sawdust, can be put to its highest and best use instead of being wasted,” said Don Peterson, Executive Director of Wisconsin Urban Wood.  “We commend the effort and with this recognition, DoMUS will serve as a model for integrating urban wood into large volume projects.”

Mandel Group, HGA, and C.D. Smith Construction will accept the Wisconsin Urban Wood Utilization Award during the 2018 USGBC Wisconsin Transformation Awards ceremony on Thursday, June 21, at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center. The Transformation Awards program recognizes sustainability leaders who are driving market transformation within Wisconsin’s built environment.
